Trump also said Cruz told voters that Trump supported Obamacare - the ultimate sin among Republican voters - which Trump called "a total lie!".

In another tweet, Trump said Cruz had lied about his opinion of President Barack Obama's healthcare program, Reuters reported.

Cruz also compared Trump to Bernie Sanders, who is considering contesting the Democratic Iowa caucus results that put him just 0.2 percent behind Hillary Clinton.

"I think it could have been the debate", Trump, who finished second behind Ted Cruz, said during a news conference in Milford, N.H., on Tuesday.

Officials from the Iowa Republican Party did not respond immediately to questions about their process for handling complaints like Trump's.

Earlier on Wednesday, Cruz spokesman Rick Tyler told CNN the Texas senator had apologised personally to Carson.

"Ted Cruz didn't win Iowa, he stole it", Trump said as part of a Wednesday-morning tweet storm.

"To turn out Indian Americans in New Hampshire to vote for Donald Trump on February 9, the Indian-Americans for Trump 2016 officers chose to educate the Indian-Americans about the primary election process", a statement said.

The tycoon went on to accuse the Cruz campaign of sending mailers to "thousands" of Iowa voters that were created to look like "voter violation" certificates.

A spokesman for Carson, the former surgeon who is still in the race, had called the Cruz campaign's actions on caucus night "dirty tricks". Cruz said in an interview with Fox News on Tuesday: "That was a mistake on our part and, as I said, my respect and admiration for Ben could not be higher". "You know the crowds I've been getting up there".

Trump and Cruz appear together at a rally protesting the Iran nuclear deal in September.
