WannaCry Ransomware: Microsoft Calls Out NSA For 'Stockpiling' Vulnerabilities

Massive ransomware attack hits 99 countries

Microsoft president Brad Smith used Friday's global ransomware attack as a chance to call once more for the nations of the world to create and adhere to a set of Geneva Convention-like rules in cyberspace.

Over the weekend, hospitals in the United Kingdom were forced to turn away some patients as a result of a computer virus that had infected its systems.

"MNCs, banks, telecom and big IT firms are prepared to deal with such attacks as they have got their cyber policy in place by installing latest updates, anti-virus software and firewall". Two hospitals in Indonesia were infected, resulting in patient files being held for ransom.

Bossert will also be searching for who is responsible for the first wave of ransomware attacks as well as those involved in a possible second wave. His law firm sued LinkedIn after a 2012 data breach, alleging individuals paid for premium accounts because the company falsely stated it had top-quality cyber security measures.

In Japan, several large manufacturers have been hit, reporter John Matthews tells NPR: "Companies including Hitachi have reported several of their systems going down, including computers at a hospital in eastern Japan". Since then, the worm has spread to close to 200,000 PCs worldwide, affecting utility companies and health services including the UK's National Health Service (NHS). He said people still using older systems should upgrade.

"The governments of the world should treat this attack as a wake-up call", he wrote. It asked for a ransom payment of $300 in bitcoin to unlock the computer.

The latest attack disrupted services worldwide, including in the United States, Spain, France, Turkey, Brazil, Germany, India, China (universities), Ukraine, Taiwan and Russian Federation.

Because AHCA guts protections for those with pre-existing conditions, one estimate would have 775,000 more lose coverage here. Additionally, local hospitals - already strapped - will likely be forced to raise taxes if they are to keep their doors open.

In the US, "the list of victims is very small", a Department of Homeland Security official tells NPR, noting that it's still relatively early in the WannaCry attack. -National Security Agency for its own intelligence-gathering purposes and later leaked online. A month before the ShadowBrokers released the EternalBlue vulnerability, Microsoft issued a patch for it, but that didn't stop the ransomware's spread. While no solution is ideal, if you really want to catch the latest malware, you need more advanced solutions that leverage behavioral detection to catch new threats. The amount increases by the day.

In North America, Lakeridge Health in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada was affected by the attack, reports CTV News.

New variants of the rapidly replicating worm were discovered Sunday and one did not include the so-called kill switch that allowed researchers to interrupt its spread Friday by diverting it to a dead end on the internet.

"Not only that, the most successful hackers continually evolve the ransomware program and their methods, which makes them so secure", he said. Additionally, experts warn that copycats could also try another attack. Microsoft released a patch for the vulnerability after it leaked this year, but many users may not have updated their systems. Keeping "offline" backups of data stored in locations inaccessible to the infected computer, such as external storage drives, prevents them from being accessed by the ransomware, thus accelerating data restoration.

More cyber attacks are already reported and you can expect even more problems when people come into work on Monday and turn on their computers, only to realize they've become a victim of the virus, too. While the virus appears to be slowing, the fear now revolves around reports that new variations have started to appear.

He added that the Cyber Swachhta Kendra, the government's portal for information about cyber security is being updated on regular basis since Saturday.
