Storms take deadly turn in march across the country

On Tuesday, May 16, one person has been reported dead and at least 25 others were wounded when a trailer park in western Wisconsin was hit by a tornado.

There also were reports of possible tornadoes in Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas, the National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center said.

Walker visited a trailer park near the city of Chetek on Wednesday afternoon where one male resident was killed and 25 people were injured Tuesday night.

The National Weather Service confirmed that the tornado started in Wisconsin at around 5:30 p.m.

"We will continue to assess area damage in the mobile home park and other parts of the county", Fitzgerald said in a press release in the early-morning hours of Wednesday. He said his sister also had a 2-month-old grandson, Nolan, in the home when the storm hit, and they had nowhere to go but the bathtub.

Images shot from a helicopter for CNN affiliate KFOR showed homes with their roofs ripped off. Photos from the scene showed flattened homes and debris and furniture strewn across streets.

School was canceled Wednesday for the Chetek-Weyerhaeuser Area School District and the district said that the High school building was open for people needing hot showers.

Chetek is about 110 miles northeast of Minneapolis/St. Paul and about 40 miles north of Eau Claire, Wisconsin.

A mobile home park resident described the storm to WEAU-TV.

"This was a supercell that developed, a discreet storm", he said Tuesday night.

Authorities said rescue workers planned to be at the trailer park near Chetek all night.

One of the hardest hit areas was a mobile home community in Chetek, Barron County.

Another tornado was captured on video near Mclean, Texas, though no injuries or significant damage were immediately reported.

The sheriff said that in his more than 20 years of law enforcement, he has never seen storm damage like this.

Other tornadoes in western Oklahoma and the eastern Texas Panhandle have downed power lines and utility poles, but there were no immediate reports of injuries.

"There are no other injuries that I am aware of at this time in other locations".

"We're pretty certain it's a tornado", said Bill Borghoff, lead meteorologist with the National Weather Service. "Some strong, long-lived tornadoes are expected, along with hail to near 4 inches in diameter, over parts of Kansas and Oklahoma", forecasters at the center said.

One person in a auto was killed, the station reported, citing an emergency response official.

Strong winds caused a small plane to flip over at Eppley Airport in Omaha, Nebraska, Tuesday, NWS reports.
