ICE arrests nearly 190 in LA-area operation, including convicted rapist

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrests totaled 41,898 between January 20 and April 29, 2017, compared to 31,128 over the same period a year ago, according to spokesperson Danielle Bennett.

One of the arrestees was a 29-year-old Salvadoran man who was deported in 2014 after he was sentenced to nine years in prison for rape.

Federal immigration officers arrested almost 200 people in Southern California during an operation that targeted criminals and lasted five days, authorities announced Thursday. "The individuals that we do find out about, again, are booked into a law enforcement facility, fingerprints taken", said David Marin, an ICE field office director.

"All we believe are deportable", said Virginia Kice, spokesperson with ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement), "including eight who had been previously removed".

ICE's top priorities for arrests remain immigrants who they say pose a national security threat or those with multiple, violent convictions.

All three had active immigration detainers at the time they were in the custody of the Philadelphia Police Department, Ritchey said, but were released instead of being held for ICE.

President Donald Trump did sign an executive order earlier this year calling for expedited deportation and 5,000 more federal immigration agents, but fulfilling that order at this point is overly ambitious, Walters said.

"This phenomenon is generally confirmed in the recent arrest data released by ICE, which shows that ICE arrests in places like California, dropped off sharply after the state sanctuary policy (the Trust Act) was adopted", Vaughan said in an email.

"His daughter is active-duty military, his son-in-law is active-duty military", Pasquarella said.

"The same data shows that numerous non-sanctuary jurisdictions saw a higher increase in ICE arrests under Trump policies than did areas with major sanctuaries".
