Apple Teases iMac Pro with Intel Xeon Processors, Crazy Specs

Apple Will Become The Leading AR Platform

In WWDC 2017 keynote, they announced an update to its iMac, MacBook, MacBook Pro and MacBook Air lineup of devices. We're looking at Apple's new iMac Pro starting at $4999. and scaling much higher than that if you pack it with all of the tech goodies you can imagine. Introducing the 10.5in Apple iPad Pro. Obviously this means that the smaller tablet is the most affordable buy, but Apple has crammed improved specifications into the new iPad Pro models in order to attract consumers.

The more interesting move here, however, is that the 15-inch MacBook Pro with Touch Bar now offers Radeon discrete graphics in both its iterations, a shift from last year's model. It's also worth noting that the SSD drives across Apple's entire MacBook line have been updated, as well. The RAM is 8GB, and it comes with Intel Iris Plus Graphics 640. The top-end model, the Radeon Pro 580, promises 5.5 trillion floating-point operations per second (T/FLOPS) of compute performance in a thermal envelope AMD claims is perfectly suited to the iMac's slim all-in-one design.

Additionally, Apple has opted for an interesting array of ports with the new iMac, mixing USB-C Thunderbolt 3-capable plugs with standard USB 3.0.

All these changes are welcome for anyone in the market for a new iMac. All-Flash storage is configurable at up to 4 TB, 2666 MHz DDR4 ECC RAM scales to 128 GB, and two Thunderbolt 3 controllers are built in for accessing external storage and other devices. For me, it's just nice to finally see Apple paying attention to the GPU.

Apple says that the new iMac comes with the "best Mac display ever", as it 43 percent brighter at 500 nits and with support for 1 billion colours. With the new processors, the new MacBook Pros can perform at 3.3GHz with Turbo Boost of up to 3.6GHz. The processor is Intel core i5 dual-core, and clock speed of 3.1GHz, with up to 3.5Ghz Turbo Boost. That might make the MacBook a more attractive option, given that lackluster performance was one of its main disadvantages. It remains upgradeable to an Intel Core i7 running at 2.2 GHz. Each falls into the three-dimensional graph of price, performance, and size in a different spot. Let's find out more details about the Hardware announcements that Apple has taken wraps off. All of the new MacBook Pro models get a free macOS High Sierra update later this year. But that will likely cost extra on the new MacBook Pro.

The iMac Pro is slated to ship sometime in December 2017, and you can sign up for notifications about preordering now.

Users shouldn't have to carry around myriad adapters just so that they can use their various devices with the MacBook Pro.

But while Apple did seem to have gone overboard with the specs, the professionals for whom the iMac Pro was made seem to be on the fence about it after the initial shock has worn off.

The iMac Pro is a beast, no doubt about that.

One minor yet significant update is also the signature Apple keyboard which now comes with a number pad (!) for the Excel junkies. £889 for WiFi only, and a whopping £1,019 for the 512GB model with cellular data. "Our customers love iMac Pro is a huge step forward, and there's never been anything like it". A lot, with the base iMac Pro configuration starting at $4999.
