Texas mom charged after leaving toddlers to die in hot vehicle

Amanda Hawkins was arrested in Texas after her two daughters died following a night of being strapped to their auto seats. Kerr County Sheriff Rusty Hierholzer said that at some point the 16-year-old went out to the auto and slept for a while but then went back inside the house.

The girls were transferred Thursday to University Hospital, where they died around 5 p.m. that day. The sheriff stated after returning to the vehicle and finding the children in trouble, Hawkins did not immediately take the children to a hospital.

Amanda Hawkins was arrested in San Antonio and is now being held on $35,000 bond per count, the Kerr County Sheriff's Office said in a statement on Friday.

An investigation by the police and child protective services found that Hawkins had intentionally left the girls overnight in her vehicle while at a friend's. She allegedly bathed them after, instead of rushing them to the hospital because "did not want to get into trouble".

Hawkins faces two charges of abandoning and endangering.

No charges have been filed yet in that case. The release went on to say that while the children were in the auto, the mother had been spending time with a 16-year-old male friend and other friends inside a home. At another point, Hierholzer said, the 16-year-old who arrived with Hawkins returned to the auto and slept there for a little while. "She left them in that auto". She told them the girls were smelling flowers there and then suddenly collapsed.

Babies may sleep longer in their own rooms, study says
Risks for SIDS include loose bedding, sleeping in the same bed as parents, sleeping face-down and living at home with a smoker. Room-sharing has been estimated to lower the risk of SIDS by as much as to 50%, according to the report Moon co-authored.

She said, "No, they're fine".

KENS reports that Hawkins bathed and re-dressed the children in an attempt to cover up the fact that she had left them in the auto for so long with no food, water or bathroom breaks. But some time Tuesday evening, he said, someone heard the girls crying outside and asked Hawkins to bring them in.

'I hesitated for so long because I didn't want her kids in the system, ' she told the station.

"They thought maybe they got into something poisonous", Hierholzer recalled the mom's story to Fox San Antonio.

A friend of Hawkins, Miriam Davis, who has known her since middle school, told KSAT 12 that she noticed Hawkins treating her children badly and regretting not calling Child Protection Services.
