'Wonder Woman' grosses P48.39M on PH opening day

DC introduces some much-needed levity to its universe with the uneven Wonder Woman

It's probably safe to say that superhero fans are breathing a sigh of relief knowing how much positive buzz is surrounding Wonder Woman at the moment (you can read our review here). That would make it one of the year's biggest movies. The story was created by Zack Synder, Allan Heinberg and Jason Fuchs based on "Wonder Woman" created by Dr. William Moulton Marston, a psychologist and attorney who invented the lie detector test in 1915.

There are already signs of progress.

The film explores the shades of morality and tackles grander thematic questions about the goodness of humankind.Diana emerges from Themyscira believing human warfare to be merely a product of Ares's meddling, but slowly comes to question her own moralconvictions while witnessing the horrors of battle. Gina Prince-Bythewood, who is black, is lined up for "Silver & Black", chronicling the adventures of Silver Sable and Black Cat. How insecure can someone be that the idea of a woman superhero feels threatening? Iron Man was the first film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the success of Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight showed the world that these characters need to be taken seriously. Jenkins' subtle comments on empowerment are peppered throughout the film.

Speculations on the sequel being set in another time period stemmed from "Wonder Woman" director Patty Jenkins's interview wherein she was asked whether the next adventure of Diana/Wonder Woman (Gadot) will have a time setting different from that of the current movie.

"Whether it's Superman or Batman or Spider-Man or whatever it is, they always had heroes to look up to, and for girls it's always the princesses who are being saved, who are being passive", Gadot said to Refinery 29.

A petition titled "Release Wonder Woman in Lebanon" released a day after the ban argued that movie buffs in the country should be given to opportunity to enjoy the wonderful character of Wonder Woman. Box Office Mojo reports that the film pulled in an impressive $11 million in Thursday night previews, making it the third highest-grossing film for Thursday previews of this year. Speaking to Uproxx, (via io9), Jenkins said "It is for sure [set in the 100 years prior]".
