People around Belleville say the city is a main street community, but following yesterday's shootings, many worry the actions of Hodgkinson will cast a shadow on this quiet Midwest town for years to come.

In 2006, Hodgkinson was arrested on assault charges and threatening someone with a shotgun. Sanders acknowledged Wednesday that Hodgkinson had apparently been among many volunteers on his 2016 campaign. He allegedly punched a woman who was a friend of the girl. Police shot Hodgkinson, who later died.

"If you put two people in front of me and said pick the person you think did what happened today, he would not have been on my radar", the former mayor said. He worked on his laptop and sipped coffee, rarely joining in the political discussions often set off by the TV.

"I told the sheriff, 'I don't know what's the matter with that guy, but he can't be shooting like that, '" he said.

Stephen Brennwald, an attorney and YMCA regular, said he thought it was odd that Hodgkinson never exercised or wore workout clothes.

We don't think fingerpointing and accusations are going to do anything to ratchet down the animosity in our political atmosphere.

At her weekly news conference, House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi said she was "personally heartbroken" over Scalise's injuries.

The investigation proceeded as Republicans and their Democratic colleagues took the baseball diamond for the annual game at the Washington Nationals' ballpark, seven miles from the field where Hodgkinson opened fire and a few blocks from the Capitol. He always drank Budweiser from a can and drank alone, barely speaking to anyone, including the bartenders.

Colleagues said Scalise, who had been fielding balls at second base, dragged himself away from the infield, leaving a trail of blood before they rushed to his assistance. After the girl broke free, Hodgkinson followed and "started hitting her arms, pulling her hair, and started grabbing her off the bed".

"I don't really see a change about how accessible I am with constituents being out and about and in the community".
