Brooks Koepka caps a record week with US Open title

Justin Thomas created history by registering the first round of nine under par at the US Open

Brooks Koepka had a birdie putt on every hole and made three of them to build a one-shot lead after nine holes Sunday in the U.S. Open.

Koepka carded a closing 67 to finish 16 under par, matching the tournament scoring record set by Rory McIlroy at Congressional in 2011.

The Florida native opened the final round 11 under and one shot behind Harman, the 54-hole leader.

The question now becomes how Koepka can follow up from his U.S. Open win. Ball striking was pretty solid, it had to be today especially with the wind. Fowler started one shot out of the lead at the Masters this year and shot 76. In fact, it was the first time since the world rankings were created in 1986 that the top three ranked golfers in the world missed the cut.

American golfer Brooks Koepka has timed his run to perfection with an authoritative final round to clinch the US Open at Erin Hills.

Thomas bogeyed three of the first five holes and tied for ninth at 8 under, eight shots out of the lead.

As the front nine progressed, it looked increasingly as if it would come down to a question of who would blink first. I think that was the difference. "I would have had to play some pretty spectacular golf to catch him". But back-to-back bogeys on 12 and 13 caused him to slip while Koepka was surging ahead. But Koepka birdied 14, 15 and 16 to pull away. "On some of these par fives I don't even need to hit driver to get there and I putted brilliantly this week too". He was clutch. He made sizable putts on four successive holes-13th, 14th, 15th, and 16th, the last three being birdies-rolling the ball right in the middle of the cup every time at the ideal speed. The last two champions, Dustin Johnson and Jordan Spieth, went on to finish in the top 10 at The Open Championship the same year.

Koepka settled for a tap-in par, but that didn't matter. "And, as the week went on, coming into [Sunday] I kind of realized I didn't really have a shot anymore, but I still wanted to play my best golf and see what I could do". "Came up a little short", Matsuyama told reporters through an interpreter. He nearly muffed the third, leaving it 41 feet away, but calmly two-putted for the title.

"It's awesome to get the calls and texts I got last night".

Matsuyama's 66 was the best score on a windy final day, one better than Koepka. "It was like, two minutes". I had an opportunity today and I didn't get it done. "And I built a lot of confidence off of that". He's just really impressive physically. Instead, they say things like, "I'm past that now". It's a big, big golf course, with long rough and all that stuff, but it lets you play.

"But he just said a few things, and just stay patient". He kept it in the short grass, the secret to Erin Hills that wouldn't appear to be that hard with some of the widest fairways for this major. And it's no surprise. He had been on the road for so long, in so many different countries, and was feeling lonely.

7 Consecutive first-time winners in golf's majors with Brooks Koepka's victory. This was their U.S. Open to step forward and demonstrate the broad sweep of 20-something talent that fills the game. "To be in the same category as the names on this trophy is truly special".

Starved of any playing privileges in the United States when he turned pro in 2012, Koepka played the Challenge Tour in Europe, graduated onto the European Tour and then progressed onto the PGA Tour in a career path that should provide lessons to other aspiring professionals. A one-time baseball prodigy, he was striking out. I scrapped a little bit for it, but I felt fine. "I don't know why". At the same time, I don't feel as if I lost the golf tournament.
