Wawrinka Powers Past Cilic to French Semis

Murray will face Japan's Kei Nishikori seen here on his way to the querterfinals

Andy Murray shrugged of a sluggish start, staging a comeback on Thursday for a 2-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7-0), 6-1 defeat of Kei Nishikori and a place in his fourth straight French Open semifinal. The world number one fell behind two breaks and the eighth seed served out the set after just 35 minutes of play.

As is often the case with Murray it required a sense of injustice to unlock his best shots and on this occasion it came courtesy of a time violation from umpire Carlos Ramos.

There was so many long rallies, second and third sets. He won his first Grand Slam title - the Australian Open - in 2014, just two months short of his 29th birthday.

However, the incident brought the best out of the top seed and he was soon on level terms, aided by a dip in form from Nishikori.

All told, the 2015 champion broke Cilic's serve on six occasions and won half of the big-serving Croatian's service points in a match that featured little suspense. "Stan had played really well, while I had struggled in some matches".

"I will fight, fight and fight as hard as I can and hopefully make it a tough battle", said Murray. He's a great player.

While three of the winners in women's fourth-round action Monday - No. 2 Karolina Pliskova, No. 3 Simona Halep and No. 5 Elina Svitolina - are highly seeded, none of the eight players left in that field has ever won a Grand Slam tournament. "So I'm sure it's going be tough one, but I will try to enjoy it and try to win the match".

Murray came out on top in their last meeting in Paris but Wawrinka is not anxious about the result in 2016 and thinks he can get on top of the Scot this year.

Former Wimbledon champion Goran Ivanisevic has backed the Briton to beat Nishikori.

"Rafa's had a great clay-court season, as has Thiem".

Wawrinka, 32, is now the oldest semifinalist at Roland-Garros since Jimmy Connors in 1985.

Nine-time champion Rafael Nadal will take on Dominic Thiem in the second semi-final pairing, after the Austrian knocked out defending champion Djokovic. He takes a 2-4 record into the showdown with Nadal, whom he beat in the Rome quarters.

The Swiss will face either Andy Murray or Marin Cilic in Friday's semifinals.

Murray received an award for finishing 2016 as world number one, with brother Jamie sharing the men's doubles trophy with Brazilian partner Bruno Soares.

- The 25-year-old Czech will meet Caroline Garcia in the quarter-final.
