Terrifying 2018 National Climate Change Report is Leaked to the NY Times

But fearing that it would be suppressed by the administration of President Donald Trump before it reached the general public, scientists behind the massive effort have released the findings directly to The New York Times. The draft report, written by scientists inside and outside the USA government, "will force President Trump to choose between accepting the conclusions of his administration's scientists and the demands of his conservative supporters", the Times says. They say average USA temperatures have risen rapidly since 1980, and are now the warmest in 1700 years.

The report was available on the Internet Archive non-profit website at the start of the year, however.

Another scientist who preferred that his identify be kept anonymous while speaking to the New York Times reveled that numerous concerns had been raised.

Whether the Trump administration releases the report remains to be seen.

But the spokesman told Bloomberg BNA the draft climate science report should still be viewed as an "interim report" that will be wrapped into a broader National Climate Assessment.

Another co-author of the report noted it was not leaked.

But even if humanity were to stop emitting greenhouse gases cold-turkey, the lingering effects would generate an additional 0.5 degree Fahrenheit in average warming, the report adds.

The report states that "it is extremely likely that human influence has been the dominant cause of the observed warming since the mid-20th century". Several scientists who were report authors have said the report was not "leaked" as the Times claimed, but had been available during a public comment period, and was still available on at least one Web site.

"If the administration is backing out of the Paris agreement and there's not a strong backing of the idea of human-caused climate change, than our report will most surely come into conflict with some of those stated ideas".

The White House review will be the latest indication of Trump's outlook.

"When you get down there to [the Environmental Protection Agency], you realize there is constant questioning of everything scientific of EPA that may have any implication down the line to have an impact on the regulated community", Thomas Burke, an EPA official under former President, .

A report now being developed by federal scientists warns of dire consequences from climate change, conflicting with public statements from officials in the Trump administration about the severity of rising greenhouse gas emissions. "The White House will withhold comment on any draft report before its scheduled release date". The saga of how the the first National Climate Assessment fared under the George W. Bush administration is cautionary tale.

As for hurricanes, "The projected increase in the intensity of hurricanes in the North Atlantic could increase the probability of extreme coastal flooding along the U.S. Atlantic and Gulf Coasts beyond what would be projected based exclusively on [relative sea level] rise". The study reveals how the average global temperature has risen by 1.6 degrees Fahrenheit since the Second Industrial Revolution of the mid-1800s.

US climate scientists have watched these policy developments with increasing alarm, with some expressing concern the Trump administration might seek to bury or significantly water down the quadrennial climate assessment.

Compiled by scientists from 13 federal agencies, the document the Times is pushing connects global warming to human activity - 'especially emissions of greenhouse (heat-trapping) gases'.

"The president has surrounded himself with a "rogues gallery" of climate deniers coming out of close ties with the carbon polluters", Gore said on "CBS This Morning". "I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt at the moment", he says.

Though Trump has not formally expressed a definitive stance on global warming issues, his administration has taken actions that seemingly reject the notion that human activity contributes to climate change.
