Guam tourism sees silver lining in North Korean threats

How to survive a nuclear attack, explained by Guam officials

Like other USA territories, Guam has a sometimes complicated relationship with the US mainland but many across the island say despite the threats and concerns they feel reassured and protected by the military - especially in times of tense, geopolitical sparring. -South Korea exercises later this month that North Korea, which is finalizing plans to launch a salvo of missiles toward Guam, claims are a rehearsal for war.

That puts its total population of 170,000 in range of the Hwasong-12 intermediate-range ballistic missiles that Kim Jong Un's regime has threatened to fire as a counter-punch to President Donald Trump's warning that the USA would respond with "fire and fury" to provocative actions by North Korea. Hopefully Kim Jong Un will find another path!

The Lancers were joined by South Korea KF-16 multi-role fighter and Japanese Mitsubishi F-2 multi-role jets.

The exercises are expected to run from August 21-31 and involve tens of thousands of troops on the ground and in the sea and air.

Tensions between Pyongyang and Washington have been escalating due to North Korea's tests of nuclear and inter-continental ballistic missile.

Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham said there are two scenarios that could trigger war with North Korea.

Officials have not raised the United States territory's threat level after Pyongyang said it had laid out plans to strike near the island in the coming weeks.

Trump's tough North Korea talk backed by Mattis and Tillerson
North Korea responded by claiming it is preparing a plan to fire missiles at the USA territory of Guam in the western Pacific. Their arsenal of between 20 to 50 nuclear weapons could easily reach Alaska or the West coast of the USA , experts say.

Gov. Eddie Calvo and Guam Homeland Security Advisor George Charfauros on Wednesday noted the defense systems put in place in the region, such as the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense, or THAAD, missile system permanently stationed at Andersen Air Force Base.

President Donald Trump has issued a number of warnings to the rogue state over its threats to the U.S. and on Friday said leader Kim Jong Un will "truly regret an attack on Guam".

"I don't think there's anything to worry about".

Pyongyang's threats to launch four missile strikes near the U.S. territory has stirred global curiosity in the remote Pacific destination, with it trending heavily on search engines as social media users wondered, "what is Guam?" "We've got defense mechanisms in place ... they have the ability to seek out the missiles with kinetic energy and destroy it".

North Korean state-media on Wednesday showed images of a mobilisation of tens of thousands of citizens parading through Kim Il-sung square in Pyongyang carrying banners in defence of leader Kim Jong-un and denouncing the latest United Nations sanctions to punish the regime for its missile launches. Regardless of who was in the White House, he said, diplomacy failed. Peterson said he reserves judgment, stating that everyone responds differently to a bully.

The U.S. and its allies, Mattis said, are capable of fending off an attack.
