Paul Casey leads at the Tour Championship

TOUR Championship- Round One

Former Alabama golfer Justin Thomas captured the FedEx Cup, the PGA Tour's championship trophy, and the $10 million bonus that comes with it on Sunday.

Jordan Spieth is three shots back as he tries to wrap up the FedEx Cup.

But while there is little to separate them on the course, there is a clear victor when it comes to larking around, they told CNN Sport at the season-ending Tour Championship in Atlanta. Thomas's 66, while sufficient to succeed Rory McIlroy as overall FedEx champion, was not enough to make him the first player since Tiger Woods to record six event victories in a season.

Thomas' five Tour victories this season include a breakthrough major title at the US PGA Championship in August.

Spieth led the FedExCup heading to Atlanta but narrowly missed out on topping the standings for a second time, slipping back to second after finishing the week in a share of seventh. It caps off what will surely be a rookie-of-the-year-worthy season, one that featured his two victories, three top-10s, 10 top-25s and more than $6 million in total earnings.

Thomas overtook Jordan Spieth, who started the Tour Championship as points leader.

What fans were treated to instead was the Rams and 49ers going off in a shootout where they combined for 80 points on the night. If anything it's opened up space for Cooper Kupp , who has seven catches on twelve targets in the young season.

"It's awesome just because I feel like I played so well this year", Thomas said. I have no idea what his future holds, but if it's half as good as what we got in 2017, then we're in for a hell of a career. The success early in the year made me think I should play well every week.

Thomas did his part, even with a runner-up finish. "It was about as much as I can get out of a five-iron", he said, before adding that he was trying to keep thoughts of the FedExCup out of his mind. Spieth attempted to move forward with an eagle on the tenth hole but a bogey on the fifteenth kept him from having any momentum in the competition. "I weaseled my way in", he said as his father Stefan looked on. Still with work to do are Hunter Mahan, the only Ryder Cup player in the field, and Sam Saunders, the grandson of Arnold Palmer who would rather not rely on sponsor exemptions that PGA Tour events are more than willing to offer.

Dustin Johnson, third in the points standings, is two under after shooting a 68.

It meant Spieth ending the year as the Tour's No. 2. Now I can plan around the majors and build a schedule that is beneficial for my golf game on the course and my body off the course.

Schauffele kept his round going on the back nine when he made par putts of 8, 6 and 12 feet. But we've now got the Presidents Cup on tap this week, and Golfweek will have a full crew out there covering the action.
