AAP says EC gave no opportunity to explain

The Election Commission's recommendation to disqualify the legislators may lead to the AAP's removal from the Delhi Assembly.

The Opposition BJP and the Congress have demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal over the poll panel's reported decision.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who expressed support for AAP, also criticised the Election Commission saying a constitutional body can not be used for political vendetta.

As it faces a crisis over the imminent disqualification of 20 MLAs, the AAP is upset over an aggressive campaign by the Congress against it, as leaders feel it will affect the joint Opposition onslaught against the BJP.

Earlier in the day, the EC recommended to President Ram Nath Kovind the disqualification of 20 AAP MLAs for allegedly holding office of profit.

The Office of Profit issue came to haunt the ruling Aam Admi Party in Delhi as the Election Commission today recommended to the President of India, the disqualification of 20 of its MLAs for their appointment as parliament secretaries for a little over 1 year between March 2015 and September 2016.

Sisodia also alleged that his MLAs were not given a chance to present their case. There were no parliamentary secretary posts. "However, yesterday (Friday), the Commission scrapped their membership of the Assembly without any notice", said AAP leader Gopal Rai. Then Kejriwal introduced the Bill without seeking prior approval from LG (remember Delhi is a partial state and LG is the executive head).

Speaking to reporters, Delhi's deputy chief minister, Manish Sisodia, expressed his shock on the EC's recommendations calling it unconstitutional. He said the BJP stands prepared for elections "any moment".

At the Bharatiya Janata Party's Delhi headquarters, late-night deliberations over the issue revolved around a "dismissal of the incumbent government" with "another 16 AAP MLAs" expected to "meet the same fate". Kumar Vishwas further added that after he was told that it was CM's prerogative to appoint people, he remained quiet.

While the AAP has approached the Delhi High Court against the EC recommendation, it still has a comfortable majority in the 70-seat Delhi Assembly, retaining 46 MLAs, 11 more than the 35 halfway mark. "Arvind Kejriwal should take responsibility for moral defeat and resign", he said.

"Where is Lokpal? The MLAs and ministers enjoying perks of power and foreign travel-Where is political probity", he tweeted.
