YouTube Makes It Harder For Creators To Monetise

Some accused YouTube of turning its back on new and smaller creators - the people who critics claim made the video streaming service into what it is today.

"We are committed to protecting our users, advertisers, and creators", Google running YouTube said in a statement on January 16 (local time).

Previously, a YouTube channel needed to have 10,000 views over its lifetime to apply for monetization. In order to qualify for monetization, a channel now needs to have accrued 4,000 hours of watchtime in the past 12 months, and have 1,000 subscribers. But small channels will be cut out and viral video creators can no longer make quick profits from a hot clip.

Until recently, there has been no real control as to which videos the companies can place their advertisements on based on the videos' actual content, resulting in the placement of otherwise wholesome product endorsements and government ads to videos with inappropriate content such as extremist videos or those that display highly sensitive issues such as suicide.

(Neowin) Following the Logan Paul suicide forest controversy a couple of weeks ago, YouTube has come under fire for improperly vetting its content.

Pope Francis Defends Chilean Bishop Accused of Covering up Sexual Abuse
Francis formally joined in matrimony 41-year-old Carlos Ciuffardi and Paula Podest, 39, who have two children and are both flight attendants .

Prior to being reviewed manually by YouTube, these videos will not serve ads though they will still generate subscription revenue through YouTube Red. It is a lot more hard for small creators to make the threshold into Google Preferred, and they are pissed. Furthermore, vloggers like Logan Paul and PewDiePie, though with a significantly less celebrity breed, still lurk around with their harmful politics - and YouTube still continues to amplifying their voices.

It can be argued that the new policy does more than overcorrect: it punishes the wrong creators. Paul's actions drew widespread condemnation for both himself and YouTube.

As the standard for placing ads on YouTube, the world's largest video site, has become stricter, ads are likely to vanish from a number of unqualified channels on the website.

Not everyone is against the new policy. Other supporters argue that the new policy will be better for the channels that manage to stay monetized as they will have less competition for advertisers. Nothing changed in either of these situations, and arguably, each user received little more than a slap on the wrist. YouTube says this verification process will be completed by mid-February in the USA and end of March for the rest of the world.
