Woman denied emotional support peacock on United Airlines flight

"I've actually not had a situation where we had something go terribly awry with an emotional support animal, aside from a cat".

Performance artist Ventiko had attempted to bring her emotional support animal, Dexter, onto the United Airlines plane - even trying to buy a second seat for the bird.

A spokesperson told the Associated Press his owner had been informed of this three times "before they arrived at the airport".

The Jet Set, a travel and lifestyle show, first reported the incident.

Most react to emotional support animals with coos and adornment, but for Dexter the peacock, reactions were far from welcoming. As a passenger, would you want to be seated next to a peacock, even if it was across the aisle?

Since that meeting took place, airlines have been reevaluating their policies on bringing emotional support animals on board flights.

"I really think that the whole emotional-support animal thing is just getting out of hand", Laurie said in an interview Tuesday afternoon.

"In order to ensure we provide the best service to everyone onboard our flights, consistent with government rules we now require these customers to provide documentation from a medical professional and at least 48 hours advance notice".

The travel talk show called The Jet Set shared photos and a video of the woman taking her peacock into the airport.

United told Business Insider that passengers need to "provide documentation from a medical professional and at least 48 hours advance notice" before bringing an emotional support animal onto a flight. It wasn't so long ago that a writer for the New Yorker performed a stunt with several animals as a way of demonstrating the ridiculous extremes we've come to when it comes to accommodating support animals.

Beginning March 1, the airline will require passengers with service animals to submit paperwork two full days before flying.

Department of Transportation guidelines state that some "unusual service animals" can pose a safety or health risk and that airlines are not required to transport them, according to Hiller.

Competitor American Airlines said it was also looking into "additional requirements". The airline said it had seen an 84% increase since 2016 in incidents involving improperly trained animals, including urination, defecation, and attacks on passengers and crew members.
