SC Rep. Trey Gowdy announces he won't run for re-election

Another one bites the dust!

"I will not be filing for reelection to Congress nor seeking any other political or elected office; instead I will be returning to the justice system", Gowdy said in a statement.

Gowdy, chairman of House Oversight Committee, says he will not seek re-election. "As I look back on my career, it is the jobs that both seek and reward fairness that are most rewarding", said the statement. The current rankings from the University of Virginia's Center for Politics and the Cook Political Report expect that Republicans will maintain a bare majority in the House.

A former federal prosecutor, Gowdy was first elected to the House in 2010, and became chair of the House Oversight Committee past year after Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, resigned his seat and his position as chairman.

The House Intelligence Committee was expected to release a memo today written with Gowdy's help that purported to show wrongdoing by members of the FBI investigating Trump's campaign.

The Benghazi panel revealed the existence of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's private email server and controversies involving it proved to be damaging to her failed 2016 presidential bid.

Gowdy's SC seat is not expected to be a pickup opportunity for Democrats eager to regain control of the House in the 2018 midterm elections.

In closed-door interviews, he has been the chief questioner for the Republicans on the committee, relying on his prosecutorial experience to cross examine numerous witnesses.

Gowdy is a former federal prosecutor.
