US Threatens Venezuelan Oil Embargo, Would Support a Military Coup

"Chinese people might be surprised to find out that their country is labeled a 'new imperial power, '" said Global Times in an op-ed. Tillerson said the U.S. was discussing ways to raise the pressure on the Venezuelan government, which is planning to hold early presidential elections.

The announcement was made during US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson's trip to Buenos Aires where he met with his Argentine counterpart Jorge Faurie.

"The situation is becoming quite dire in Venezuela", said Tillerson, who added that the administration was weighing the effect of sanctions on the Venezuelan people - and whether they would quickly produce the desired result.

An oil ban against Venezuela has been rumored in the past but the sanctions have only involved Venezuelan government officials.

The current visit of U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson seeks stronger bilateral, trade ties with Peru, foreign affairs analyst Juan Velit affirmed.

Argentinian President Mauricio Macri has enjoyed a close business relationship with Donald Trump that dates back to 1980s, and was one of the first to congratulate the American mogul when the latter was elected as president.

"Is it a step that might bring this to an end, to a more rapid end?" Sanctions from the United States have also done the same against several officials.

US Threatens to Ban Venezuelan Oil

Tillerson is now in Argentina meeting with the country's Foreign Minister Jorge Faurie.

"We have not advocated for regime change or removal of President Maduro. As a outcome, the people suffer", he said.

Faurie seconded Tillerson's comments, emphasising the need to tackle global crime networks for the interests of both countries. "Workers of the oil industry, we are threatened by imperialism" he added.

The U.S. has already placed sanctions on several high-ranking Caracas officials as well as a ban on financial dealings with the country and its state oil company, PDVSA.

Also, the Los Angeles Times reports that several Latin American countries, including Mexico, had earlier voiced their concerns about Trump's intent to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), warning that they may reconsider their cooperation with the USA on other matters if the deal breaks down.

Cuba's Foreign Ministry said that it saw the secretary of state's remarks as an effort to "instigate openly an overthrow, by any means", of the Venezuelan government, likely alluding to Tillerson's remarks last week about the potential for the Venezuelan military to oust Maduro - a comment that came months after Trump said the USA could take military action.
