Safety system install had signals out during deadly SC train crash

The NTSB said investigators recovered video from a forward-facing camera on the Amtrak train. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will be sending a team to the crash site, according to a statement given by Amtrak early Sunday afternoon. "So she refused to go to the hospital thinking she might miss the connecting train", Red Cross Volunteer Beryle Burnett said. Police report that the CSX freight was unoccupied at the time of the high-speed crash.

"My thoughts and prayers are with all of the victims involved in this mornings train collision in SC", he wrote Sunday on Twitter.

Amtrak staff quickly got people off the train, Pettaway said.

Cahill also said that around 5,000 gallons of fuel had been spilled and is being secured.

"It's a terrible thing to see - to understand the force that this involved", Mr. McMaster said.

Among the injured, one was in critical condition, two were listed as serious, while the others having minor injuries like cuts and bruises, said Steve Shelton, Palmetto health director of emergency preparedness.

Stocks Post Biggest Drop of New Year
Express Scripts, McKesson, Humana, Cigna, UnitedHealth , CVS Health and Centene were down between 5.3 percent and 7.2 percent. Declining issues outnumbered advancing ones on the NYSE by a 4.65-to-1 ratio; on Nasdaq, a 2.16-to-1 ratio favored decliners.

Amtrak said there were 139 passengers and eight crew on Train 91 when it struck a CSX train at 2:45 a.m., just a few miles from Columbia, South Carolina, in the town of Cayce.

Michael Kempf, the 54-year-old train engineer from Savannah, Georgia, was killed in the crash, she said. "CSX controls the dispatching of all trains, including directing the signal systems which control the access to sidings and yards", the statement reads.

The two dead were Amtrak employees on the passenger train, according to McMaster. On Wednesday, a train carrying Republican members of Congress to a retreat in West Virginia hit a garbage truck in rural Virginia, killing a passenger in the truck. Local authorities are on the scene responding.

"We know they are shaken up quite a bit".

U.S. President Donald Trump received regular updates on the crash while at his resort in Palm Beach, Florida. "Thank you to our incredible First Responders for the work they've done!" An emergency official earlier told reporters the injuries ranged in severity from small scratches to broken bones. In December, three people were killed and dozens more injured when another train derailed near DuPont, Washington.
