ESPN Plus Streaming Service Announced, Will Cost $4.99 A Month

Disney is in the process of creating a ESPN Plus app, that it plans to sell to USA customers for $4.99 per month.

But yesterday on Disney's earnings call CEO Bob Iger unveiled some more details, including pricing.

In case you've already forgotten, Disney is aiming to release their own Netflix competitor in 2019 - which, considering the fact they've just hoovered up all of 20th Century Fox's assets - looks like it might be a pretty compelling option.

"This subscription service will feature thousands of additional live events, giving fans access to more leagues, more teams and more games than ever before", he added. "That will include an array of live programming that is not available - live sports, live sports events - not available on current channels". He mentioned baseball, soccer, hockey, boxing, golf, rugby and cricket as examples. If, like me, you have no clue what that means, Iger elaborated a bit during an interview with CNBC.

Stock: Shares rose 0.7% to 105.40 in the stock market today, trying to regain their 200-day moving average after plunging through its 50-day line on Friday and its 200-day on Monday as the market sold off.

How that will fly with consumers remains to be seen when the service launches sometime in Spring.

Arun Jaitley's Budget 2018: What does it say for urban India?
Allocating Rs 5.97 lakh crore to improve India's infrastructure is a firm step towards bringing it at par to Asian levels. Given an election-heavy calendar, allocations have risen for agriculture, healthcare and education sectors, experts felt.

Launching ESPN Plus is a significant step for Disney in their quest to capture a major chunk of the audience that's increasingly turning to digital streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon Video.

Disney wants even more control over its content, including ESPN.

It appears ESPN is getting into the streaming world. The company also announced that its direct to consumer streaming offering ESPN Plus will be priced at $4.99 a month.

"Domestic results [also] benefited from the comparison to the impact of Hurricane Matthew", year-over-year, the company said.

Investors are surely hoping that ESPN Plus will inject some much-needed life into a network that has struggled.

Amid declining TV advertising revenues at its top TV networks, Walt Disney posted stronger-than-expected overall results in its fiscal first-quarter earnings period. The quarterly report is also Disney's first since it announced the departure of ESPN President John Skipper, who abruptly resigned from his position last December to address personal issues.
