Japanese primary school asks parents to buy £525 uniform

A public school in Tokyo is proposing to take its dress code to a luxury level by introducing Giorgio Armani uniforms for students.

While the uniform is not compulsory, parents have complained to the local education board saying that peer-pressure among the children will compel them to purchase the outfits.

"From the intention to make a uniform as a 'school of Ginza, ' we went around department stores and Armani accepted designing it as a result", the school told the board.

On Twitter, one person pointed out: "I heard that school uniforms were originally invented so kids from different income families wouldn't face discrimination".

The issue has now been brought up before the local education board which was first informed of the plan previous year.

Todd Frazier staying close to home, signs 2-year deal with Mets
Frazier hit.213 with a.772 OPS between Chicago and NY last season while cutting his strikeout rate as K's rose across the league. Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports that the Mets have an agreement with Todd Frazier on a two-year, $17 million contract.

As Taimei is a state-funded school, many are confused as to why the school would choose such overpriced uniforms. A school in Japan has made headlines for its new policy on school uniforms, announcing children at the primary school will soon be forced into wearing $936 Armani uniforms to school.

"I was surprised, and wondered why such luxury brand-designed uniforms have been picked for a public elementary school", a mother who chose to remain unnamed said, according to The Guardian.

The uniform features sharply tailored blazers as well as add-ons like bags that can push the total set's cost to around 90,000 yen, a price another commentator described as "just too expensive for uniforms for fast-growing children".

However, despite the criticisms, it looks like Taimei students will be dressed in Armani come spring. In a letter, Principal Toshitsugu Wada explained how he hit upon the idea to have a tony fashion brand design new clothing to express the identity of "a school in the Ginza".

The recommended uniforms (not required) will be rolled out in April, the AP reported.
