Indian Mujahideen Terrorist, On The Run Since Batla House Encounter, Arrested

An alleged Indian Mujahideen (IM) terrorist, who was linked to serial blasts in Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat and Delhi and had escaped during the Batla House encounter, was arrested from the Indo-Nepal Border, police said.

Most wanted Ariz Khan 32-year-old engineering graduate was on the run since the September 2008 Batla House encounter, where two IM suspects were gunned down and two others were detained by the police. Encounter specialist Inspector Mohan Chand Sharma lost his life during the operation.

Delhi Police on Wednesday arrested Indian Mujahideen terrorist Arij Khan alias Junaid who was wanted for his involvement in five bomb blast cases.

According to the police, Ariz Khan alias Junaid alias Salim Sir was apprehended from the Banbasa area of Uttarakhand, bordering Nepal, at around 1720 hours, based on a tip-off regarding his arrival at the place to meet some of his contacts.

Ariz Khan aka Junaid was arrested from the India-Nepal border after the special cell got a tip-off, said DCP Pramod Kumar Kushwaha of Delhi Police while speaking to the media. He is responsible for deadly terror strikes in which about 165 persons were killed and over 535 were injured. While two IM suspects were gunned down in the encounter, Khan and another IM suspect Shezad had escaped.

"They have been planning the revival of the weak and scattered network of Indian Mujahideen", he said.

Initially, he and his elder brother Shariq Khan stayed with their uncle Dr Fakhre Alam and started studying at the Shibly National Nursery School from where he shifted to another school, the officer said.

He reached Birat Nagar and managed to procure a Nepali citizenship and passport. He later went to Saudi Arabia from where he returned to Nepal in 2017. As a cover, he worked as a labourer.
