Canada and Germany share gold in historic Winter Olympics bobsleigh

For the first time in 20 years, two teams shared the gold in two-man bobsled.

Heading into the final run, only 0.13 seconds separated the top five spots - and it somehow got closer in the final run.

For this reason, the silver medalist in the race was not, and the bronze award went to the Latvian Oscar Melbardis and Janis Strand (+0.05). In particular, people love that the Germans were so thrilled with the tie that they were the first to run over and congratulate their Canadian fellow medalists, proving that good sportsmanship at the Olympics is alive and well.

Weinstock said he didn't feel any pressure on his first Olympic stage, and wasn't surprised that Olsen was fine so quickly after surgery.

They had much to celebrate. The German gold medal winning bobsledders were Francesco Friedrich and Thorsten Margis.

Both teams claimed the gold after recording exactly the same combined time from four runs, at three minutes and 16.86 seconds.

Kripps thought the Germans' excitement on the track was because they had won silver. "Thorsten was giving me a hug and said it was three hundredths, two hundredths, then a tie".

Comox's Cassie Sharpe takes top spot in halfpipe qualifying run
Sharpe is deeply competitive in a way that can only be honed from a young age growing up with and trying to outdo two brothers. Nico Walther and Christian Pose were the quickest duo after the second run, but their Germany team-mates lie close behind.

A triumphant Margis could hardly believe what had happened either.

"It was wonderful", Friedrich said after the race.

Canada and Italy shared gold in 1998 and Italy got the gold over West Germany in 1968, even though both sleds had the same time.

Lueders is now in charge of the South Korean bobsleigh team at their home Games. Their photo finish was impossible to call. Twenty-year-old Gao Tingyu of China took bronze. 'I was tying my skates when Cha did his race and the atmosphere was unbelievable. Havard Lorentzen won the 500-meter gold medal Monday at the Gangneung Oval in an Olympic record time of 34.41 seconds.

"Getting that base to start really allowed me to be where I am right now".

He ended with a flurry of effort, his arms and legs pumping like pistons, before waiting nervously until the timekeepers put his name up on the big screen.

"He [Lueders] actually taught me to drive bobsled", the 31-year-old Kripps continued of Lueders, who now coaches the Republic of Korea team.
