Israel envoy says Palestinian running from peace

Palestinian leader Mahmud Abbas will urge world powers at the UN Security Council on Tuesday to stand up to the USA decision to recognise Jerusalem as Israel's capital and establish a revamped peace process.

France's U.N. Ambassador Francois Delattre said his government received Abbas' proposal with interest and will study his call for an worldwide conference, but USA participation in the Israeli-Palestinian peace process "is indispensable". The Palestinian leader doesn't want the charge of the peace process after the Trump administration's decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

KELEMEN: Abbas, though, left the council well before Haley spoke and before Israel's ambassador, Danny Danon, had a chance to respond. But he said council members "haven't received any details" of the US proposal for Palestinian-Israeli peace. "The choice, Mr President, is yours", Haley said.

"We come here before your august council in the midst of the deadlock of the peace process due to the USA decision regarding Jerusalem", he told the 15-nation council.

"Instead of traveling a short distance from Ramallah to Jerusalem to negotiate directly with Israel, Abbas chose yet again to come to United Nations headquarters in NY to ostensibly advance peace by internationalizing the conflict", said AJC CEO David Harris.

Joined by Trump's Middle East envoy Jason Greenblatt and White House senior adviser Jared Kushner, Haley's speech was created to deliver a direct message to Abbas: "Our negotiators are sitting right behind me, ready to talk". "Or you can choose to put aside your anger about the location of our embassy and move forward with us toward a negotiated compromise that holds great potential for improving the lives of the Palestinian people".

A White House spokesman, Josh Raffel, said that Kushner and Greenblatt are "finalizing" the administration's peace plan- a detailed document that has produced hundreds of pages, and that offers specific proposals to some of the toughest sticking points in the conflict.

He is responsible for deadly terror strikes in which about 165 persons were killed and over 535 were injured. Encounter specialist Inspector Mohan Chand Sharma lost his life during the operation.

"To solve the Palestine question, it is essential to establish a multilateral worldwide mechanism emanating from an global conference", Abbas told the 15-member council.

Danon said Jerusalem will remain the undivided capital of Israel "forever".

The Palestinians opposed a partition plan that would have created a two-state solution in 1947, rejected a proposed peace agreement in 2000, and did so several more times over the subsequent decade. His decision infuriated the Palestinians, who declared that Washington could no longer play a role as lead mediator in the Middle East peace process.

"In the coming period, we will intensify our efforts to achieve admission to full membership in the United Nations and to guarantee worldwide protection for our people".

HALEY: Our negotiators are sitting right behind me, ready to talk. "You don't have to praise it. But know this: that decision will not change", she added.

Extremist Palestinians and their supporters often refer to the "occupation" as including all of current Israel, thus rejecting the Jewish state's legitimacy and right to exist.

The continued expansion of Israeli settlements is one of the major obstacles to the establishment of peace in the Middle East.
