Met Office issues snow warning for London with temperatures set to plummet

Met Éireann's long-range forecast for Monday and Tuesday says: "Very cold for the time of year with daytime temperatures in the low single figures inland, and around 5 or 6 degrees on coasts".

The Met Éireann report for March 2013 said that nearly all weather stations reported the coldest March since their station records began.

A cold snap is set to hit Ireland over the coming days and disruptive snow showers are likely, according to Met Eireann.

They added "Power cuts may also occur and other services, such as mobile phones may be affected".

It's as if someone opened the freezer door in North America's kitchen, and let all the cold air drain out toward the midlatitudes.

The Met Office has warned of travel delays, stranded vehicles and passengers and possible cancellations or delays if you are travelling by air or rail.

'During Monday and Tuesday, snow showers are expected to move into eastern areas, before spreading westwards across England.

After a frosty start, a dry day with sunny spells is expected.

Negative phases of the NAO are typically associated with colder and snowier-than-average conditions on both sides of the Atlantic, but in this case it's mainly going to affect Europe, at least at first.

And it will turn even colder on Sunday night, reaching lows of 0C to -3C. Minimum Temperature -3 °C. With the easterly breeze remaining brisk throughout, there will be a notable wind chill. No further snow is indicated for Thursday, March 1, but both days will be very, very cold with highs of just 1C during the day and -6C overnight.

Some places, particularly along exposed coastal areas, will also see blustery conditions and wintry showers of sleet and hail.
