18 injured after reports of ferry explosion in Mexico, local officials say

A dramatic footage has emerged showing explosion in a tourist ferry at Mexican beach leaving at least 25 people injured.

Among the injured were twenty Mexicans, three Canadians and two Americans, according to local civil defense director for Playa del Carmen Juan Medina Sosa.

The US Embassy in Mexico said it was aware of multiple Americans hurt in the incident, but has not released details.

A 12-year-old and 14-year-old boy from North Dakota were hit with flying glass and shrapnel.

The family said the boys were cut and bruised but are recovering. In a statement, the local government said that victims suffered minor cuts and were sent to the hospital.

The explosion was caught on security cameras at a dock in Playa Del Carmen.

Video taken after the blast and posted online showed at least two ambulances on the dock attending to some of the injured.

The Barcos Caribe vessel, in which the explosion took place, was left with a gaping hole in its starboard side, right next to a passenger seating area.

The initial investigation has revealed the explosion was caused by a mechanical failure, according to Quintana Roo officials.
