Iraq sentences 16 Turkish women to death for joining Isis

An Iraqi court has sentenced 16 Turkish women to death by hanging for joining Daesh (ISIS), a judiciary spokesman said Sunday.

"The convicted women had confessed during the investigation they joined ISIS, marrying ISIS members and providing logistical aid to the group", Judge Abdul Sattar al-Beeraqdar was quoted as saying by CNN. The women have admitted that they have married members of the jihadist group or have provided logistical support to them or were involved in terrorist attacks.

The Iraqi Criminal Court yesterday sentenced 15 Turkish women to death for belonging to Daesh. Daesh is the acronym for the Arabic name of the terrorist group.

Thousands of people, including hundreds of foreigners, are awaiting trial in Iraq on charges of aiding or being members of Isis, including 560 women and 600 minors.

It is the latest round of harsh punishment handed down in connection with ongoing trials of hundreds of foreign women detained since August.

Iraq has handed over to Russian Federation four women and 27 children suspected of having ties to the group, the foreign ministry said on Thursday, adding that they were "tricked" into joining the militants.

According to Human Rights Watch (HRW), several women of different nationalities along with the ISIS fighters have surrendered to the Iraqi forces.

Also on Thursday, an Iraqi newspaper reported that more than 1,500 foreign women and children from the families of IS militants are being held by the Iraqi authorities, which are coordinating with the countries of origin to decide their fate.

Several Western governments, including the United Kingdom, have expressed a wish for nationals who travelled to the Middle East to fight on behalf of the group be tried in Iraq.
