National Basketball Association world reacts to Kobe Bryant's Academy Award

Last night the Oscars had quite a few surprises, and one of them came from National Basketball Association champion Kobe Bryant.

Bryant retired from the game in 2015 drawing the curtain on his life as a player penning down an animated film known as "Dear Basketball", that has won the prestigious Oscars award.

The award was presented to Bryant alongside veteran Disney animator, Glen Keane.

The Lakers legend seemed stunned by his achievement and had to take a deep breath before delivering a strong message.

"I don't know if it's possible", he said, as reported by The Hill.

"As basketball players, we're really supposed to 'shut up and dribble, '" Bryant said during his acceptance speech.

Facebook drops newsfeed experiment after it promoted fake news
Test drew major criticism from publishers in countries like Slovakia, Sri Lanka, Serbia, Bolivia, Guatemala and Cambodia . On Thursday, Mosseri said those recent changes will address the needs of users more than the Explore Feed test.

Bryant said that the inspiration to make his poem into a short animated film, came from his 11 year-old daughter, Gianna, who had told him, "Dad, you always tell us to go after our dreams, so man up".

He thanked his wife and family for their support and was lauded on social media for his win by former National Basketball Association stars like Shaquille O'Neal, Magic Johnson and Bill Russell. Bryant has made the rounds in receiving prestigious awards from various organizations.

"It's, it's, I feel better than winning a championship. I swear I do", he said. Dear Basketball showcases top moments from the Los Angeles Lakers star's storied career, animated in hand-drawn images. You'll be depressed when your career's over.

"To be here right now and to have like ... a sense of validation is ... this is insane, man,".

The six-time NBA championship victor was recognised for Dear Basketball, a five-minute film based on a love letter to the sport he had written in 2015. As he told Carter, all his plans "center around sports". "This is the democracy we live in, that's what makes America handsome". "Much like music does".

After a year full of fraught conversations about whether a person can separate the art from the artist, Oldman's past behavior rang alarm bells for some viewers who saw his award as undermining the Time's Up movement.
