Shiffrin wins World Cup slalom title

Mikaela Shiffrin returned to slalom form to clinch the overall International Ski Federation (FIS) World Cup crown in the event with a victory in the German resort of Ofterschwang today.

Shiffrin is the second American female skier to win multiple overall titles.

Shiffrin stretched her lead over the only remaining challenger, Petra Vlhova, to 225 points with just the season-ending race at the World Cup finals remaining. Lindsey Vonn won the sport's most coveted prize four times.

Shiffrin, who turns 23 on Tuesday, set the mark for the most World Cup wins by a 22-year-old, and she says she's not done pushing hard this season.

Shiffrin was a clear favorite to successfully defend her maiden overall title when she won the first five races of 2018. Gallhuber's compatriot Bernadette Schild finished third, 0.39 seconds behind the leader. That's because Swiss skier Wendy Holdener, her closest competitor and only remaining rival for the title, failed to finish in the top two to stay in contention.

Vladimir Putin Celebrates 'Tenderness and Beauty' in Women's Day Poem
If there is this decision to destroy Russian Federation then we have a legal right to respond'. "I have no disappointment at all", Mr Putin said when asked about the USA president.

"It's still my goal to finish the season as strong as I can", Shiffrin said, adding she would "try to have some fire" in Are. PyeongChang gold medalist Frida Hansdotter of Sweden was third.

"It was a really good fight", said Shiffrin, who celebrates her 23rd birthday March 13.

The World Cup finals begin Wednesday with women's and men's downhill, and the season concludes next Sunday.

Shiffrin was planning to take a few days off before flying to Are and compete in the last GS and slalom races of the season, with nothing more at stake than just the race win. Her last race was at age 26. "Hopefully, I'm not going to be feeling a lot of nerves (in Are) because there is not a lot of risk".
