Macron lauds India's climate change efforts, takes a jibe at Trump

Susantono said: "ADB's energy policy commits $3bn per year by 2020 for promoting clean energy, including solar energy projects in its developing member countries".

Because they decided it was good for them, for their children, their grandchildren. From thousands of years ago, the Vedas in India have seen the sun as the soul of the world.

After subsequent ratification by nearly 30 countries (15 was the minimum number required for it to gain a legal status) and with 61 countries having signed the framework agreement, it became a legal entity.

Mr Macron told world leaders in Paris in December that "we are losing the battle" against climate change and urged faster action to combat global warming. Referring to the Solar Mamas, a group of women solar engineers from developing countries particularly African countries who have been trained at the Barefoot College in Tilonia, Macron said, "our solar mamas didn't wait for us".

The International Solar Alliance is a treaty-based international body for the promotion of efficient exploitation of solar energy to reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

The heads of 23 nations and 10 ministerial representatives gathered here for alliance's first summit.

"India has launched the "world's biggest renewable energy programme with a target to generate 175 GW of electricity from renewable sources by 2022".

Other issues for the nation's solar scale-up include the tricky business of figuring out how to integrate renewables into the existing electricity grid and the lack of a business model for such utilities - a problem other countries using solar energy also face, Chawla said. As per a report from Mercom India, India crossed just over 20 gigawatts of solar energy production in January.

At present, the country's renewable energy installed capacity is 63 GW.

It was also underlined that it would be the "endeavour" of the ISA Member States to achieve sustainability by generating growth, enhancing skills and creating jobs and unleashing entrepreneurship by fostering innovation and increasing incomes. The Delhi Solar Agenda was launched at founding summit, which states that countries will pursue an increased share of solar energy in the final energy consumption in their respective national energy mix to tackle global challenges of climate change. "They made a decision to act and keep acting, and that's why we are here, in order to act very concretely", Macron said amid applause. Also on the cards is a project to develop solar energy storage for use in mobility, Tripathy said.

Initially, ISA envisaged 121 sunshine countries situated between the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn as its members.

On Saturday, India had stated that ISA "is planning to get all the multilateral development banks to support" the cause and increasingly ISA is "appealing to these development banks if they could set aside a particular percentage of their loan portfolio to fund renewable energy projects worldwide".

The founding conference of ISA is being co-chaired by Indian prime minister Narendra Modi and French president Emmanuel Macron in New Delhi, with delegates including heads of state and government, ministers, chief executives of global organisations and other high-level officials.

Indian minister of energy R.K. Singh said that ISA has potential to have a huge impact on the future of the planet, with renewable energy now a viable alternative.
