Apple's Tim Cook criticises Facebook's data collection practices

"We could make a ton of money if we monetized our customers, if our customers were our product", Cook said an the interview with Kara Swisher and Chris Hayes. He follows that with: "We've elected not to do that".

Such detailed profiles of people, with "incredibly deep personal information that is patched together from several sources" like Facebook has compiled, shouldn't be allowed to exist, Cook said. Cook repeated the mantra of his predecessor, the late Steve Jobs, that maintaining user privacy is important to Apple in contrast to its competitors.

Cook expressed the same view last week at the China Development Forum in Beijing, where he has built a good reputation for following regulations.

"I think that this certain situation is so dire and has become so large that probably some well-crafted regulation is necessary", Cook said at the summit. He added: "However, I think we're beyond that here". It's a civil liberty, and something that is unique to America.

Facebook, data, and privacy have been the topic of discussion all over the internet as well as out.

The Apple chief boldly called for regulation of internet companies such as Facebook to limit the way they're able to use the data of their customers. Thanks to the crisis at Facebook, shares of Google, Twitter, Amazon, Netflix and Tesla (for reasons all of its own) have all dropped in the past week.

"I think it's an invasion of privacy".

After van der Zwaan pleaded guilty to false statements on February 20, Kilimnik declined to comment on whether he was Person A. Manafort and Flynn were closely linked to Trump during the campaign and in the White House, respectively .

"I'm not making fun of it!", replied Cook.

For Facebook, Playboy's move is part of a backlash against the company, exemplified by the DeleteFacebook hashtag, that has grown in the wake of the Cambridge Analytica revelations.

Cook talked heavily about Apple's work in education, saying that initiatives such as Everyone Can Code help the company ensure that students get the most out of their education.

When asked what would he do if he were Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg?

About 8 per cent of Facebook users said they plan to stop using the service because of data-privacy concerns raised by the Cambridge Analytica scandal.

Responding to challenges from his Twitter followers, Musk deleted the Facebook accounts of all his companies.
