Eight cases of severe bleeding reported after using synthetic cannabinoids

The update comes forward when six people face severe bleeding after using the synthetic cannabinoids. Roughly 10 of the cases were in Tazewell and Peoria Counties.

Cara Smith, spokeswoman for the Cook County sheriff's office, said in an email that the office was working with state officials to get more information about the origin of the synthetic pot contributing to the outbreak.

All 38 people went to hospitals after experiencing some form of severe bleeding, according to the health department.

Fake weed is illegal in IL, but crafty manufacturers often tweak the formula of products to circumvent state laws, allowing them to be sold legally.

Jordan Clarkson added 23 points and Tristan Thompson had 14 rebounds in 21 minutes for the Cavs , who have won seven of eight. Clarkson was also a key performer for the Cavaliers as he scored 23 points on 9-of-13 from the field.

In those cases, people who used synthetic cannabinoids were hospitalized for symptoms such as coughing up blood, urinating blood, and bloody noses or gums, IDPH said.

Shah says they're unsafe because it's hard to know what chemicals they contain or what an individual's reaction will be. Many of these products are packaged in ways that appeal to youth. It's not known whether the store is linked to any of the recent illnesses.

Synthetic cannabinoids are man-made and mind-altering chemicals that can be smoked after being sprayed on dried plant material. The process is often inconsistent and leads to variations in product strength and effects. But officials believe that number will grow, as it's possible contaminated products have been sold across the state. "The vast majority have reported acquiring the product in the Chicagoland area", Layden said.

"They are not safe and may affect the brain much more powerfully than marijuana", according to the IDPH, which urged people not to use synthetic cannabinoids that were bought over the past month. A study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also found the use of fake weed can increase risky and violent behaviors, particularly among teens. Because health officials don't know the exact makeup of the products, it's unclear what's causing the bleeding, she added. The products are also sometimes referred to as herbal or liquid incense.
