Snapchat Rolling Out Group Video Chat & Mentions For Stories Feature

The ephemeral video app will be rolling out group video chat for up to 16 people in the coming weeks.

If you don't want to get in on the video chat fun, but still want to chat, there's a way to do so.

The video chat feature, meanwhile, will allow up to 16 friends to conduct a video chat with each other simultaneously. This starts the live video call in the app, while pressing the phone icon starts a voice call with the people in the group instead. From there, your friend will receive a notification, allowing them to join for as long as the chat is going on for. During these group chat sessions users can apply face filter lenses to their faces, according to the report.

The new group chat option is being heralded on the Snap Inc.

Auto giants Nissan, Renault in talks to merge, insiders say
No final decisions have been made and the talks, which have been ongoing for several months, may not result in a deal, they said. The French manufacturer owns 43 percent of Nissan, while in return the Japanese firm has a 15-percent stake in Renault.

Users can also join with just their voice, or send messages that others can read while they talk, Snap said.

The person tagged will be notified in the chat window that they've been mentioned in the user's Story. The feature could let brands call out individual employees or followers in Stories, or promote influencers' content. Snapchat's main audience is under 25 years of age, and it has had to defend itself from older rivals like Instagram-which blatantly borrowed its "Stories" feature-and newcomers offering fresh distractions.

Instagram, owned by Facebook, has been a relentless Borg-like foe to Snapchat, assimilating its best features and threatening its business survival.

That particular component should be useful, as Snap Maps has increasingly been a hot spot for real-time, first-person updates during breaking news, like natural disasters and protests, as well as more entertainment-focused moments like concerts and popular sporting events.
