PM Abassi to leave for Afghanistan today

Prime Minister Shahid Khaqani Abbasi on Friday arrived in Kabul on a one-day visit to hold talks with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani on matters of mutual interest.

The Prime Minister will also meet senior Afghan political leaders during the visit.

In a statement, its foreign affairs ministry said Pakistan's security forces were countering militant groups based in Afghanistan that launch attacks across the border.

In a statement, the Foreign Office said Abbasi was visiting Kabul on an invitation of Afghan President Ashraf Ghani.

Pakistan rejected as "baseless" the allegation that it violated Afghan airspace, however.

The resumption of peace talks dimmed further after Mullah Omer's successor, Mullah Mansur, was killed in a USA drone attack in Pakistan near Afghan border in 2016. They also expressed their firm resolve not to allow politics to affect their economic relationship which was important for the welfare of the peoples of the two countries.

To promote regional economic integration, the two countries are participating in key trans-regional initiatives - Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) gas pipeline and Central Asia-South Asia Electricity Transmission and Trade Project (CASA-1000).

Pakistan said Abbasi welcomed Ghani's vision for peace and reconciliation in Afghanistan and his offer of peace talks to the Taliban.

The objective of Abbasi's visit to Afghanistan is to strengthen the positive momentum in bilateral relations and help augment joint endeavours in the pursuit of durable peace, stability and economic prosperity in the two countries, and the region, according to FO statement.

Since then, several attempts have been made, with little success, to resume the stalled peace process by a four-nation group comprising of Pakistan, Afghanistan, the USA and China.

Earlier this week a high-level Pakistani delegation has reached Afghanistan to hold talks with Afghan authorities on the Afghanistan-Pakistan Action Plan for Peace and Solidarity (APAPPS).

Afghanistan on Thursday accused Pakistan of air strikes causing "huge financial damages" in its province of Kunar bordering Pakistan, highlighting long-standing mistrust between the neighbours, even as both seek ways to improve security.

During his meeting with Ghani, the Afghan president invited PM Abbasi to "initiate a state-to-state comprehensive dialogue".
