Ben Sasse: Donald Trump Ready to Rejoin TPP to Help American Farmers

Ben Sasse of Nebraska, an occasional Trump critic, applauded the president's willingness to reconsider his order to remove America from the TPP.

A year later while speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Trump expressed interest in renegotiating the TPP or coming to individual deals with the various countries involved in the trade partnership.

Kansas Sen. Pat Roberts, the chairman of the Senate agriculture, nutrition and forestry committee, said he was "very impressed" that Trump had assigned Kudlow and Lighthizer "the task to see if we couldn't take another look at TPP".

The move would mark a stunning reversal for Trump, who sharply criticized the pact as a "disaster" and made opposition to global trade deals a centerpiece of his economic agenda as a candidate.

Leith has previously done great work unpicking why this is such a dud deal.

After the USA defected from the TPP, other members of the trade deal went ahead with it.

Meanwhile, violent clashes are going on in the area with local residents indulging in dingdong stone battles with the forces. Medical sources said that at least 82 people suffered injuries out of which Four civilians succumbed to their injuries.

Earlier in the week, Trump had alluded to China's targeting of agriculture in retaliation to his tariffs.

But entering into a new TPP could unify Trump with other trading partners and put new pressure on Beijing to either allow more imports into China or risk being alienated by other Asian countries, that would now received new trade benefits as part of the deal. The Asian nation said listed US soybeans and pork among its prime targets for proposed retaliatory duties. Last month, the 11 remaining countries signed an agreement in Chile, though it still has to be ratified by local officials in some countries.

"Last year, the president kept his promise to end the TPP deal negotiated by the Obama Administration because it was unfair to American workers and farmers", the White House said in a statement. Gov. Pete Ricketts was also at the meeting with the President.

Reuters reported that Trump talked of lifting the summertime ban on E15, which is limited due to concerns about smog.

Just by floating the idea, the Republican president drew the ire of conservatives on social media as he opened the door to joining a trade pact with 11 other Pacific Rim countries that he once dubbed "a continuing rape of our country". Gasoline typically contains 10 percent ethanol. It would be aimed at opening US farmers to more overseas markets.

That comment came in 2016 when Trump was still a candidate for president. He said Trump understood the potential consequences of a trade war. "What we want is a market", Roberts said during a congressional hearing this week.
