Russia: UK spies 'staged' toxic Syria attack that killed 43 people

Donald Trump, the United States president, has slammed Russian Federation for its partnership with "Gas Killing Animal" Bashar al-Assad, the Syrian president, spurring concerns that a U.S. strike could lead to a conflagration with Russian Federation, which has major military facilities at Tartus and Khmeimim and works cheek-by-jowl with Syria forces that could be targeted.

Damascus skies erupt with service to air missile fire as the United States launches an attack on Syria early Saturday, April 14, 2018.

The Russian Foreign Ministry also said that following Syrian rebels' withdrawal from the eastern Ghouta suburbs of Damascus, stockpiles of chemical agents were found there.

"Russia convenes an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council to discuss aggressive actions of the US and its allies", President Vladimir Putin said in a statement published on the Kremlin website.

USA officials say blood samples provided by medical workers confirm the presence of chemicals.

Earlier, the office of the Syrian Presidency tweeted a video of Bashar al-Assad going to work Saturday, with the caption "a morning of steadfastness".

Russia's Colonel General Sergei Rudskoi said at a press conference on Saturday: 'This fact of American aggression shows that United States of America is not interested in conducting an objective investigation, wishes to disrupt the process of peaceful resolution in Syria and destabilise the situation in the region and has nothing to do with the previously proclaimed goals of fighting worldwide terrorism'.

On the suspected poison gas attack on Douma, Ms Haley said: "We know who did this". US Ambassador Nikki Haley told the council "there is clear information demonstrating Assad's culpability". "It was something far bigger", he said.

The Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Syrian Arab Republic, an independent body established by the UN Human Rights Council, says it has confirmed at least 34 chemical attacks since 2013. He added that Washington seems determined to take military action in Syria and this is unsafe.

In a televised statement Saturday, UK Prime Minister Theresa May said UK forces had undertaken a "limited and targeted strike" and that there had been "no practicable alternative to the use of force to degrade and deter the use of chemical weapons by the Syrian regime".

Experts from the worldwide chemical weapons watchdog, the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, were en route to the alleged chemical weapons attack site in Douma before the joint military strike was launched. "We can not take such risks", he said at a forum.

The Ministry claims the air strikes were a response to the "success" of Al Assad's Syrian army in liberating their territory from global terrorism.

In the UK, Cabinet ministers said that it was "highly likely" the Assad regime was responsible for the attack and said the use of chemical weapons must not "go unchallenged".

Since 2015 France has carried out air strikes against Islamic State in Syria as part of allied forces linked to the US-led coalition, conducting about 5 percent of total coalition air missions.

The UN Security Council overwhelmingly rejected a Russian resolution calling for condemnation of "aggression" by the United States, United Kingdom and France against Syria.
