No party leader used the term 'saffron terror': Congress

A powerful blast, triggered by remote control, had ripped through the 400 year-old mosque in Hyderabad on 18 May, 2007, as worshipers congregated for Friday prayers, killing 14 people and wounding 58. The team recovered an unexploded bomb at Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti dargah in Ajmer, which showed that mobile phones and SIMs used in the Ajmer blast were similar to the ones used in the Mecca Masjid blast. He told television channels that accused in several cases were acquitted since the BJP-led government was formed at the Centre four years ago. Investigation against two others - Tejram Parmar and Amith Chowhan - is still on. "We have not got is the responsibility of the government to move the High Court against today's judgment and see to it that all of them are punished accordingly", he said.

This glaring inconsistency apart, which does not eliminate the possibility of the existence of a right-wing terror module in the country, courts in both Ajmer and Hyderabad largely disbelieved the major pillar of evidence on which the NIA rested its case - the judicial confession of Swami Aseemanand. Meanwhile, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi tweeted, "Judge who gave acquittal to all accused in Mecca Masjid Blast RESIGNS very intriguing and I am surprised with the Lordship decision". Devendra Gupta is the RSS pracharak from Bihar while Lokesh Sharma is a RSS activist from Madhya Pradesh.

When the cases were taken over by NIA, the Union Home Secretary was a current member of PM Narendra Modi's council of ministers, RK Singh, handpicked for the top home ministry post by then home minister P Chidambaram.

Gujarat-resident Aseemanand was earlier acquitted in the Ajmer Dargah blast case.

While 10 people in the case having links with Hindu right wing organizations were indicted, only five were put to trial. During the trial, 226 witnesses were examined in the court and 411 documents were produced.

The biggest setback for the National Investigation Agency in the Mecca Masjid blast probe were the witnesses. Aseemanand allegedly retracted the statement later. The Punjab and Haryana High Court had granted bail to Aseemanand in the case in 2014. The BJP said it had exposed the Congress' appeasement politics and proved that there is "no such thing as saffron terror".

The BJP on the other hand demanded Congress president Rahul Gandhi and his mother Sonia Gandhi should publicly apologise for insulting Hindus through its allegations of "saffron terror".
