Stay Away From All Forms of Romaine Lettuce, CDC Warns

"Based on new information, CDC is expanding its warning to consumers to cover all types of romaine lettuce from the Yuma, Arizona growing region".

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is warning customers to stay away from all forms of romaine lettuce, as the scope of its investigation into an E. coli outbreak grows.

Officials also said consumers should throw away any lettuce if they're unsure what kind it is.

"HUDS purchases all its produce through Costa Fruit & Produce in Chelsea, MA", she added.

"We recommend people throw out and do not consume whole heads and hearts of romaine lettuce, chopped romaine, and salads and salad mixes containing romaine at this time", said Dr. Cara Christ, AZDHS director. Although many infections resolve in five to seven days, they can result in serious illness, including a potentially serious condition called hemolytic uremic syndrome. No deaths have been reported.

NY Daily News has reported that Alvarado has actually been arrested before for trying to break into the property. By the time police arrived, they had found that he had taken a shower before hopping into bed.

Federal and state health officials Friday expanded upon their earlier warnings this month that said an outbreak of E. coli had only been linked to chopped romaine lettuce from the Arizona region. While the warnings focus on store-bought romaine lettuce, the warning does extend to all restaurants, as well.

Among the hardest hit states are Pennsylvania, with 12 reported cases, and Idaho, with 10.

No common grower, supplier, distributor or brand has been identified, according to the CDC.

This latest CDC alert was issued after people at an Alaskan correctional facility became ill.

As of Wednesday, the hospitalization rate for this outbreak was about 58 percent, much higher than the 30 percent normally associated with infections involving E. coli O157: H7, according to a CDC update sent to clinicians on Thursday.
