Amazon starts delivering to vehicle trunks

I gave Amazon the keys to my vehicle last week and it went pretty well.

Details: The app is part of Amazon Key, a service launched a year ago that lets delivery agents leave packages inside a house when no one is there. "How do they expect to find and unlock the trunk of my auto?" tweeted one person.

Not satisfied with dropping off parcels inside your home, Amazon can now deliver packages to the trunk of your auto. To begin with, 37 cities and the surrounding areas across the USA will have the option of Key In-Car deliveries, but it requires a connected auto.

Now Amazon can open our front doors and cars, too.

Using Amazon Key, customers can now request in-car delivery.

The service is available only to Amazon Prime members in 37 cities who have a 2015 or newer Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, Cadillac or Volvo with an active OnStar or Volvo On Call account.

The service comes as smart cities and connected cars become more commonplace around the country.

First you download the Amazon Key app to your phone, then link the app to your Prime account and to the vehicle.

Amazon is now everywhere you want to be-or at least in your trunk if you own the right auto. Then you can verify the zip code of your home or workplace to see if it's eligible for delivery. You can leave the auto in parking garages, driveways, parking lots, and anyplace else the driver can walk up to it. It could be by your house, at work (as long as it's not a gated parking area) or even at a friend's. To reduce package theft, it has installed lockers outside physical stores where customers can pick up orders.

Meechan has maintained that the video was intended as a joke, and he was simply trying to annoy his girlfriend, who owned the pug. He said: "Honestly, I don't hate anyone, the whole objective of this was just to annoy my girlfriend".

The app also notifies the customer of expected 4-hour delivery window, when the package is on its way and when it's been delivered.

Amazon has launched a new service that delivers packages straight to the trunks of cars for free!

Amazon turned the trunk of my auto into a mailbox. "It won't tell them where their next delivery is until that happens", said Shrivastava. According to Amazon's press release, the vehicle does need to be located close to a location that a user has in their address book, although they expect most users will be close to home or work. Once the driver is confirmed to be at the right place with the right package, the vehicle is unlocked.

The service will only be available for Amazon Prime members to start out. And there are quite a few of those.

"That's just Amazon taking another step further, I mean Amazon's Amazon", said Lezlie Kenny.

For my part, the service worked well, though I had to borrow a vehicle that was compatible. Tens of millions of packages are stolen each year. But privacy and legal experts say in-car delivery raises a number of concerns about consumer data, and the ways Amazon can use that information to draw conclusions about shoppers and their habits. If the package doesn't fit in the trunk, it will be placed in the cabin. It was a day that included piano lessons, two soccer games, grocery shopping, a hair cut and an eye appointment. Rather than risk losing a package, my wife and I generally get packages delivered to family members who live elsewhere.

Rafiq, who previously worked at Amazon, said Volvo might take the collaboration beyond the USA and into services beyond package delivery. Customers receive a notification when the delivery is en route, after it's made, and after the vehicle is relocked.

The online retailer already knows what you shop for and buy on its site. It's especially nice when he's making night-time deliveries.

Couriers will have access to the customer's cars Global Positioning System location. "This goes back to one-click ordering", he said.
