Trump Says He Refused to Approve $1 Billion Jerusalem Embassy

President Donald Trump said on Friday he might travel to Israel next month to attend the opening of the new US Embassy in Jerusalem.

Trump added during a joint press conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel that U.S. Ambassador to Israel David Friedman pitched a plan thereafter that would cost just $150,000, and that the two eventually "settled" on a plan that will cost American taxpayers between $300,000 and $400,000.

He initially called it "Embassy Town" but then said he might call it "Trump Town".

The Czech Republic's president suggested Wednesday that his country was considering joining the U.S.in moving its embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

He said, "It's getting ready to open, and I do want to tell that story though, because there are a couple of people that got to see it, but others, where literally, they were going to spend a billion dollars, and we're spending a tiny, tiny fraction of that, in the hundreds of thousands of dollars instead".

DC-area forecast: Clouds and a few showers today, sunshine returns tomorrow
A light rain shower is possible in the afternoon or evening, but rain will not be widespread or heavy so no need to cancel plans. High temperatures will rebound into the lower 60s tomorrow afternoon, then fall back into 50s in the wake of the cold front.

For decades, Israel has been in conflict with the Palestinians, who have been seeking diplomatic recognition for an independent state on the territories of the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, which are partially occupied by Israel, and the Gaza Strip.

"It is going to be lovely".

Palestinians also particularly object to the decision to open the embassy to coincide with the 70th anniversary of Israel's declaration of independence in 1948 - a date that they call the Naqba, or "day of catastrophe".

"The embassy in Jerusalem has been promised for many, many years by presidents", Trump said.

Trump said he had nearly signed off on a proposal to build a new $1 billion embassy but baulked when he considered the cost. "I had my name half-signed and I noticed the figure and I never got to the word 'Trump"'. "They were going to spend $1 billion and we're going to spend much less than $500,000". "We might have to build dozens of embassies, and we would need new land ready or that objective". I had "Donald" signed, but I never got to the word "Trump". "Transportation Minister Israel Katz announced in December that he would name the train station that will be built in the future near the Western Wall after the USA president", adds the Post.
