Cowboys' Jason Witten mulling secret TV offer trying to one-up ESPN

ESPN has reported that Witten plans to retire and become the lead analyst for "Monday Night Football". This isn't a money decision for Witten. Barring a last-minute change of heart, Witten will inform Jones he's calling it a career.

"He has some things to think about and discuss with his family from a professional perspective", Jones said before the introductory news conference for first-round pick Leighton Vander Esch. Although reports late last week indicated that the Cowboys had been "blindsided" by the Witten developments, Jones downplayed that Friday.

Witten was said to be the replacement for Jon Gruden.

Less than 10 days ago, Witten made it clear that he meant to play a 16th season.

The loss of Bryant is going to be one Dallas will have a hard time recovering from, and Witten's veteran leadership is needed more than ever. But rest assured that I'm going to do everything in my power to help us be better as we move forward. "I do think we wanted to do things that, as Jerry has said, that's Dak-friendly". Gathers hasn't played a regular-season game and missed all of his second season after sustaining a concussion in training camp previous year. CBS already has their former Cowboys star leading their A-team with Tony Romo teaming up with Jim Nantz.

DC-area forecast: Clouds and a few showers today, sunshine returns tomorrow
A light rain shower is possible in the afternoon or evening, but rain will not be widespread or heavy so no need to cancel plans. High temperatures will rebound into the lower 60s tomorrow afternoon, then fall back into 50s in the wake of the cold front.

Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten has a lot to ponder.

He is a member of the 1,000-catch club with 1,152, went to 11 Pro Bowls and started 229 of 239 career games.

Witten is the franchise leader in games, catches and yards receiving.

STILL NEED: The Cowboys didn't draft a safety despite moving one of last season's starters, Byron Jones, back to cornerback. Witten, like an increasing number of National Football League players, has adopted many of Tom Brady's methods, including an emphasis on pliability in addition to dry-needling, water-pressure treatment, compression wraps and deep-tissue massage. He is the player the organization pointed to for youngsters to follow. Witten was named the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year in 2012, and is widely considered to be a future selection to the NFL Hall of Fame.
