Confirmed: China has deployed missiles on the Spratly Islands

A USA intelligence report states that China has installed anti-ship cruise missiles and surface-to-air missile systems in the disputed South China Sea.

CNBC quoted unnamed sources as saying that according to US intelligence assessments, the missiles were moved to Fiery Cross Reef, Subi Reef and Mischief Reef in the Spratly Islands within the past 30 days.

The US White House in a statement warned of consequences for China in view of the increasing militarisation of the South China Sea area, which is also claimed by Vietnam and the Philippines.

While the White House wouldn't say what the "consequences" would be over the military installments, Sayers told Reuters that the U.S. could rescind Beijing's invitation to this year's RIMPAC multilateral naval exercises in Hawaii, which take place in July.

"The United States has long raised concerns about the militarization of outposts on disputed features in the South China Sea", said a State Department official who was not authorized to speak publicly on the matter.

A news report aired by CNBC said the YJ-12B anti-ship cruise missiles allowed China to strike vessels within 295 nautical miles.

Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying, regarding the militarisation said in a press briefing, "China's peaceful construction in the Spratly archipelago, including the deployment of necessary national defence facilities, is aimed at protecting China's sovereignty and security". "We've raised concerns directly with the Chinese about this and there will be near-term and long-term consequences", Sanders said.

"We have formally demarched the Chinese government, and we've requested that the Chinese investigate these incidents", she said.

The US news network CNBC reported China had installed the weapon systems on three of the artificial reefs it had developed in the strategically vital waters.

The deployment is said to be the first of its kind and ultimately shows how the Chinese have been boosting their military presence in the highly-contested region over the last few weeks.

The admiral also pointed to the fact that China's current activity contradicts what Chinese President Xi Jinping said during a White House meeting with then-US President Barack Obama in 2015.

"The only thing lacking are the deployed forces".
