Iowa Gov. Reynolds signs law banning abortion past 6 weeks

"But I think many of us still never expected that Governor Reynolds would so swiftly jump to sign a bill that is so clearly unconstitutional".

Kim Reynolds hasn't stated if she plans to sign the bill.

Previously, pro-life state Rep. Shannon Lundgren, a Republican, admitted that the legislation likely would expose the state to a legal challenge, KMA Radio News reports.

The bill bans most abortions once a fetal heartbeat is detected, which is around six weeks of pregnancy.

Abortion foes hailed the law as the first step in potentially dismantling Roe v. Wade - the landmark 1973 Supreme Court decision that granted women the legal right to an abortion.

This comes after the Iowa Senate passed a similar measure in February that would have also blocked abortions after the detection of a fetal heartbeat. "She is following through on her pledge to the people of Iowa that she is 100 per cent pro-life". Janet Petersen, who said, "Republican politicians are making risky medical decisions".

WhatsApp CEO Quits Over Disagreements with Facebook
Facebook's enormous profits, meanwhile, are powered nearly entirely by advertising targeted to its users' interests. A source confirms that Koum had been considering leaving for a year.

"If death is determined when a heart stops beating, then doesn't a beating heart indicate life?"

"We will challenge this law with absolutely everything we have on behalf of our patients because Iowa will not go back", Suzanna de Baca, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood of the Heartland, said in a statement.

She added: "This law is not just about the women and families of Iowa, it's about all Americans having the right to decide if, when, and how to have a family". "But we have to look at what's actually the right thing to do, and who should be making these decisions, and it is not us". The court struck down the law in June 2016.

There was a protest of the bill today at the state capitol, and during this hour of River to River, IPR's Katarina Sostaric and Joyce Russell join guest host Emily Woodbury. Reynolds acknowledged that there would be a court challenge.

Dawn Laguens, the executive vice president of Planned Parenthood, told Fox News that the legislation is "an extreme and draconian policy that takes aim at a woman's right to control her own body, life, and future". Reproductive justice advocates say the legislation, which only provides few exceptions, would effectively make abortion illegal in the state.

Nonetheless, the measure wouldn't ban abortion after six weeks in all circumstances - some exemptions embrace cases of rape, incest, fetal abnormalities or to avoid wasting the mom's life.
