Myanmar to probe alleged violence against Rohingya

The US President said hosting more than one million Rohingyas is a tremendous burden, but the world knows Bangladesh's actions have saved thousands of lives.

The group inspected facilities prepared by the Myanmar government for the Rohingya refugees' return.

She said the government is developing an island called Bhashanchar to give temporary shelter to 100,000 Rohingyas.

An ICC prosecutor asked the worldwide tribunal in April to rule on whether the court can exercise jurisdiction over the alleged deportation of the Rohingya from Myanmar to Bangladesh, even though Myanmar is not a member of the ICC.

Myanmar signed an agreement with Bangladesh on the return of displaced people from Bangladesh in November a year ago, announcing a readiness to start the process on January 23. Many have said they remain afraid to return. "We also mentioned the importance of the investigations regarding what happened there before the refugees went to Bangladesh".

The U.N. refugee agency and Bangladesh recently finalized a memorandum of understanding that said the repatriation process must be "safe, voluntary and dignified.in line with worldwide standards". The agencies already have signed a separate similar agreement with Bangladesh. "What we really want is just to speed up the process of the ... safe and voluntary, dignified return", he said.

"The other thing the Security Council should do is refer the situation in Rakhine state to the International Criminal Court", Kenneth Roth, the executive director of Human Rights Watch, said Friday in a speech to journalists in Yangon, Myanmar's biggest city.

At least 9,000 Rohingya were killed in Rakhine state from August 25 to September 24, according to Doctors Without Borders.

The interior Minister of the United Kingdom resigned
British Prime Minister Theresa May has appointed Pakistani-origin Sajid Javid as the country's new Home Secretary. The Minister of internal Affairs of great Britain of amber Rudd Sunday, April 29, left his post.

Myanmar has asked the Rohingya to accept National Verification Cards, which some refugees have said are inadequate because they do not guarantee citizenship.

Myanmar's government agreed to allow the delegates' visit after previously rejecting United Nations requests for a visit by a specially appointed independent fact-finding committee.

Myanmar is aware of the investigation, U Aung Kyaw Zan, deputy permanent secretary to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, told Frontier earlier this week. "We need to create opportunities for people to rebuild their livelihoods and ease growing social tensions, or we might soon be faced with an additional crisis within the crisis", the statement quoted Peter Agnew, FAO Emergency Coordinator in Bangladesh, as saying.

Aye Lwin, a Muslim representative on the Annan's advisory commission, met with the delegates in Rakhine state and urged them to ask the global community for support for Myanmar.

Prosecutors argued that the police captain had told a different story to investigators when he was arrested.

"Basically the message that we conveyed was that it was very important to improve the security conditions of the return of the refugees", he said, recalling the visit. "We replied that we [ethnic Rakhine] are always careful and still have a relationship with them [Muslims] in the region".

Nyo Aye informed one delegate that some of the refugees the United Nations team saw in displacement camps in Bangladesh before visiting Myanmar were not all from Rakhine state, but were Bangladeshis who themselves live in the camps.
