US Republicans, Democrats feel out voters' mood as four states hold primaries

"We need to secure our coal miners' pensions, protect our seniors, keep the promises we've made to our veterans, fix the epidemic of drug addiction, expand broadband, protect healthcare, and grow opportunities for all West Virginians". Todd Rokita and Luke Messer, in a costly primary race. Shelley Moore Capito, a West Virginia Republican, who credited Trump's involvement with the outcome. The CEO of automotive products firm Meyer Distributing and a former state representative, Braun prided himself on being a businessman who isn't a creature of Washington.

Most of the districts represented in Tuesday's House primary races are considered safe for Republicans. Renacci demonstrated his loyalty to Trump by signing a letter last week nominating the president for a Nobel Peace Prize.

Several incumbent congressmen who faced competitive GOP primaries all won.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — Don Blankenship couldn't overcome opposition from President Donald Trump and pressures from within his own party to capture the Republican U.S. Senate primary in West Virginia.

Pelosi, the House minority leader, was quoted criticizing Trump's tax cut plan during a town hall meeting on Tuesday, saying 83 percent of the benefits of it go to the 1 percent.

Morrisey was endorsed in the primary by the conservative National Review, which heralded him as a "rock-solid, independent-minded conservative who would be a valuable addition to the right flank of the Republican caucus".

In Indiana, Braun boasted during a recent debate that he "looks more like Donald Trump" because he's an "outsider that has done something in the real world".

In a state where Trump claimed his largest margin of victory in 2016, Republican voters heeded warnings from the president and his allies in Washington against supporting Blankenship. Overall, more Democrats voted than Republicans. He was seen as a weak candidate to face Democratic West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin who is seen as in a vulnerable position.

The races in both states are classified as tossups by the nonpartisan Cook Political Report, while the OH contest is rated as "lean Democratic".

Four of the former Republican candidates for U.S. Senate have announced their support for West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey's bid for federal office.

Confirmed: China has deployed missiles on the Spratly Islands
A news report aired by CNBC said the YJ-12B anti-ship cruise missiles allowed China to strike vessels within 295 nautical miles.

The West Virginia seat, now held by Joe Manchin (D), is considered one of several seats now held by Democrats that are vulnerable this year.

During the campaign, Don Blankenship launched a series of attacks against McConnell.

It marked a good night for the GOP establishment, yet a awful night for sitting Republican members of the House. And in central OH, a tea-party-style insurgent came within a few hundred votes of defeating the handpicked favorite of the recently retired Republican congressman, Patrick J. Tiberi, a close ally of House leadership.

West Virginia Attorney Gen. Patrick Morrisey won the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate.

The bad news for Blankenship is he's not going to be a senator.

Both Democrats and Republicans view November's election as key to Senate control. He added: "Tremendous voter energy and excitement, and all candidates are those who have a great chance of winning in November". "His Socialist opponent in November should not do well, a big failure in last job!"

State law bars Blankenship from changing his voter registration and running in the fall election as an unaffiliated candidate. Pat Tiberi. The race had become a proxy fight between Tiberi, a GOP moderate, and conservative Republican Rep. Jim Jordan.

Republican leaders had anxious that a win by Blankenship would cost them a plum shot at defeating Sen.

Mandel challenged Brown six years ago, which was a hard one for the incumbent. Pittenger is the first sitting member of Congress to lose his seat so far in the 2018 election cycle.
