Gap Apologises For Flogging Shirts With Map Of China Bereft Of Taiwan

One user on Weibo posted photos of a Gap t-shirt saying it was in a Canada Gap store and that the map design did not include Taiwan or islands Beijing claims as its own in the South China Sea.

"Upon the realization that one of our T-shirts sold in some overseas markets mistakenly failed to reflect the correct map of China, we urgently launched an internal investigation across the group and have made a decision to immediately pull back this T-shirt from all the concerned global markets", the company said in a statement, adding that a majority of the pulled shirts have already been destroyed as well. USA clothing retailer Gap has apologized Monday, May 14, 2018, for selling T-shirts with what it says was an "erroneous" map of China. "We are doing internal checks to correct the mistake as soon as possible", Gap said. It was unclear if the shirts in all of Gap's markets worldwide would also be destroyed.

The company said it strictly abides by Chinese law and will devote itself to greater scrutiny to avoid similar errors in the future.

The photo of the Gap tee was snapped inside a store in Canada, and The People's Daily, the official newspaper of the Communist Party, tweeted a photo with the "correct" version of the map.

"We have noticed this (Gap) statement and we will pay close attention to it", Lu said.

He also suggested the October 2016 settlement had been made because Trump was in the stretch run of his presidential campaign. Cohen had previously said Trump did not reimburse him, and Trump had denied knowing about the payment.

I can't imagine that, as a graphic designer for USA clothing giant Gap, you would have ever anticipated that part of your job would require officially apologising to the nation of China thanks to an global upset you caused with one of your shitty shirt designs.

The White House hit back at the push earlier this month, calling the demands placed on airlines "Orwellian nonsense".

In January, China forced US-based hotel chain Marriott International to shut down and "conduct a full content inspection" of its Chinese website and mobile app after a questionnaire that listed Taiwan and Tibet as individual countries led to complaints.

Most recently, the Chinese Civil Aviation Administration ordered a number of air carriers, including United States airlines, to identify Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau as Chinese regions on their websites.
