Pilot and boy (7) are killed as parachutists' plane crashes in bog

Under the rubble after the collapse was discovered the pilot and seven-year-old child is in critical condition, was hospitalized and later died in hospital.

The plane had taken off from the Clonbullogue Airfield, near Edenderry, just before 2.30pm.

But an Air Accident investigation continuing this morning will now focus on the circumstances that led to the death of an English pilot and a 7 year old boy in an accident in County Offaly at lunchtime on Sunday.

A Garda spokesman said witnesses saw the 16 parachutists make their jumps.

However, a short time later the plane was seen flying low to the ground before there was a "terrible roar" and it crashed "straight down like a torpedo".

All 16 parachutists onboard successfully made their exit from the plane but eyewitnesses on the ground saw the plane go down. The site of the crash is located between Daingean and Edenderry, not far from Mount Lucas.

The plane was partially submerged in the bog.

The Irish Parachute Club, which has between 150 and 200 members, remained closed on Monday but issued a statement.

He said the pilot had been hired by the Irish Parachute Club since their own plane was being serviced.

The crash is the latest light aircraft tragedy to strike Ireland.

"You hear planes up there every day but you never think something like this would happen", he said.

"These flights have been happening for the last 20 years and this is the first time I've heard of a plane going down".
