Net neutrality bill clears procedural hurdle in Senate

At a press conference following the Senate vote, Doyle announced that he would also open a discharge petition in an effort to force a vote on the issue.

"However, the Democrats" deployment of the CRA may misfire since the law is meant to overturn regulations, not the the repeal of regulations, says Randolph May, president of the Free State Foundation.

"This is our chance, our best chance, to make sure the internet stays accessible and affordable for all Americans", he said as the debate began. "Net neutrality protected everyone. that era, the era of an open Internet, will unfortunately soon come to an end". They were joined by the two independents who usually vote with them, Sens.

Wednesday's vote to still has some obstacles to face. Murkowski spent about 30 minutes on the Senate floor discussing that procedural vote with key Republicans and Democrats before making her decision. The measure can not be filibustered in the Senate.

The resolution's fate is uncertain in the House and it's unlikely to have President Donald Trump's support, the Washington Post reported.

Polls also have showed strong public backing for net neutrality.

The only practical outcome of today's vote is that Democrats challenging incumbent Republicans in the midterm elections can use it as political ammunition. The prior Administration's regulatory overreach took us in the opposite direction, reducing investment in broadband networks and particularly harming small Internet service providers in rural and lower-income areas. Without net neutrality rules in place, ISPs could discriminate against certain publishers and web services, while promoting others.

When asked for his thoughts on the anticipated slower lap times, Hamilton said: "I think in this sport the technology we're developing and moving forward all the time..."

Thune urged Democrats to work with him on a plan that he said would incorporate the net neutrality principles they desire without onerous regulation that he said made it harder to connect more Americans to the internet and to upgrade service.

Prior to the Senate vote, lobbyists for cable companies, telecoms, and mobile phone companies stated that legislation is unnecessary, and that internet service providers will self-regulate within the industry, a point that Democrats argued was false, citing the industry's recent practices of throttling and data prioritization.

"Why aren't we debating a bipartisan bill instead of a partisan resolution?" he asked.

Pai's opponents have said the rules are a necessary consumer protection as the Internet has become more vital to supporting the economic livelihoods of everyday Americans.

A similar resolution in the House, authored by Congressman Mike Doyle, a Democrat from Pennsylvania, has garnered 162 co-sponsors, all Democrats.

Senator John Thune, who chairs the Commerce Committee, said "the fact of the matter is nothing is going to change" after the new rules take effect - and will not prod people to vote.

Net neutrality supporters note that 15 Republicans crossed the aisle in March 2017 on another internet issue. But net neutrality regulations are much more widely opposed by Republicans. The White House has expressed its support for the FCC's move in December to repeal the net neutrality rules, and Trump has often touted his ability to roll back government regulations.
